The Terrain
The Oregon Trail
The gentle S. slope and storm-sheltered valley are as ideal farm land now as it was when homesteaded 160 years ago. The valley's East-West orientation allows for full sun, dawn to dusk.
Although we have city water for our house, a spring and a well provide the water for our herd's thirst and irrigation for the pasture and gardens. Ancient black walnut, massive cherry trees, and a mix of conifers and maples give shade to the cows on each of the paddocks. The mixture of over 7 varieties of grass and countless broad-leafed plants supply a rich variety of forage.
The herd is rotated through the paddocks to maximize grass production and to improve the quality of the soil. Chickens range with the cattle, scratching the pats to harvest the larvae and seeds, dispersing the manure. Irrigation from our well soaks what remains into the soil.
Our land not only produces world-class beef, but also supports a vegetable garden that feeds others and us with organic produce throughout the year. Aside from eliminating the need to buy produce, we also supply two homeless shelters, a retirement home, and one restaurant with excess crops. And when the depleted plants are pulled from the soil, the cows happily consume all that remains, from corn stalks to monster broccoli plants, mustard and cabbage leaves…they pretty much eat it all!
